This plate, rich in illustrations and information - from the phases of the moon to atmospheric refraction - was first published in black and white in Edinburgh in the 1850s by Adam and Charles Black. It underwent numerous updates and reprints reflecting advances in astronomy and chromolithographic printing before being included in a world atlas for the general public in 1873.
